Get the lead out … and on the fender.
Seven hardy Rod Benders left the warmth of their beds this cold Saturday morning for a run to Priest River. Purpose? Attend a body leading demonstration hosted by our sister club the Asphalt Angels of Priest River.
Mark picked up Bob and I and we married up with Don and Ron at the Shell station. With coffee cups in hand, everyone piled into Mark’s sweet sounding 454 hog Suburban and we were off to Priest River … hold it! Where is Paul? “He’ll catch up, we’re gone and the heck with the black ice” was our fearless Presidents response.
We arrived in Priest River in one piece and went straight to the home and shop complex of Doug Eyers, our host for today’s leading demonstration. Right after our arrival Paul and the blushing new soon-to-be-groom Les arrived … everyone headed to the coffee and cookies which Mrs. Eyers graciously provided everyone.
Without further ado, Doug Eyers began his demonstration which turned intoa hands-on sort of class for all in attendance. Doug, assisted at times by Asphalt Angels Club President Bates Coffield, effectively walked us through steps for leading rough spots on a fender.

The demonstration became “hands on” when almost all of us had to touch and feel the newly leaded areas and take a turn using the smoothing paddles and files that Doug and Bates used during their presentation. The demonstration and follow up hands on time held our rapt attention for almost two hours. In fact, we were so impressed with their demonstration we invited Doug to put on a similar demonstration at our Borders 3 car show on June 2. We hope they will take us up on the invitation.
Time to head home …with the talk in “big wheels” being about leading and body repair work in general. As it was getting close to noon, the talk turned towards food with Ron making a suggestion we stop at a small Mexican place he knew of in Sandpoint. Say no more. Mark adroitly wove (with the size of his wheels, bull dozed would be a better word) through the Sandpoint shopping traffic to Joel’s Mexican on 3rd and Church in downtown Sandpoint.
Ron is a neat guy to begin with, but after ordering and sinking our collective teeth into some awesomely fresh Mexican dishes his stature as a neat guy was amended to read: Really neat guy. Truly a good place to go and we take pleasure in giving our fellow Rod Benders this tip for truly good Mexican food.
Too bad Paul and Les could not keep up with the “hog” 454 as they missed out on some great food.
